On October 15, 2004, the Supreme Court ruling on the Minamata disease recognized the national and Kumamoto prefectural governments' responsibility and reignited legal battles waged by plaintiff groups and their supporters. A new chapter unfolds for the plaintiffs that sued the national and Kumamoto prefectural governments, which are angling for a quick resolution with minimal compensation.
