[ Story ]
In the late 1950s, mute schoolteacher, Seigo (Sakaguchi Kenji), is assigned to an elementary school with a student body of only seven on a small island in the Seto Inland Sea. His mother grew up here before eventually leaving for pastures anew, and consequently some islanders are somewhat less than welcoming toward him. However, his pupils soon warm to Seigo and call him "Kikansha Sensei" (Mr. Locomotive), and soon enough so do the other locals as his gentle ways win over the community. He even represents the island in a kendo tournament, despite having lost the ability to speak due to an injury sustained while playing the same sport. Seigo's tenure at the school comes to an end, and he decides to leave the island to revive his teaching career on the mainland. His grateful students, who have instilled him with renewed faith in himself, tearfully bid him goodbye as his ship recedes into the distance.
A touching small town drama from director Hiroki Ryuichi (Vibrator).
