SLOW LEARNER
[ Story ]
A social-issue drama by Takahashi Banmei, director of Rain of Light (Hikari no Ame). The film depicts the difficulty it can be for one human being to judge another. Based on a true story, the film portrays the agony of a judge in the 1966 Hakamada murder case, who, despite being convinced of the defendant's innocence, must sentence him to death. A miso factory in Shizuoka prefecture is burnt down and the fatally stabbed bodies of a family of four are found. Hakamada Iwao (Arai Hirofumi) confesses to the crime, but renounces his confession during the trial and pleads his innocence. The chief judge, Kumamoto Norimichi (Hagiwara Masato) has suspicions about the interrogation conducted by the police, and is convinced Hakamada is innocent, but he must follow the consensual decision and sentence him to death.
