[ Story ]

Miike Takashi's samurai epic is the first-ever 3D film to be selected to screen in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival. This adaptation of Takiguchi Yasuhiko's novel "Ibun Ronin-ki," also the inspiration for Kobayashi Masaki's 1962 film Seppuku, is a magnificent evocation of a warrior's pride and love for his family. Saito Kageyu (Yakusho Koji), chief retainer of the Ii clan, is visited by a ronin named Tsukumo Hanshiro (Ichikawa Ebizo) who requests the use of the garden at Saito's residence so that he may perform "seppuku" (ritual suicide by disembowelment). However, Hanshiro's daughter Miho (Mitsushima Hikari) was once married to a man named Chijiiwa Motome (Eita) who also committed suicide in the very same place...
