[ Story ]
An emotional drama based on an autobiographical novel by Nishimura Shigeru. The resilience of ordinary people who survived the turbulent period during and after World War II is warmly depicted from the perspective of an orphaned boy named Akio who is obsessed with sweets. In early spring of 1943, Akio (Yoshii Hajime) is caught for stealing a bag of sweets out of hunger. He is given a sweet bun by police detective Toyama (Endo Kenichi), and experiences its deliciousness and human kindness for the first time in his life. He is eventually sent to a reformatory and goes through a tough time, but finds solace in the song "Okashi to Musume" (sweets and a girl) sung by one of the teachers, Yoko (Saori).
