A documentary that questions the nature of communication, as seen in the way of life of a deaf man who enjoys conversing with people who can hear, regardless of whether they can use sign language or not. Director Imamura Ayako, who is also deaf, spent two years filming her subject. Ota Tatsuro manages a surf shop and Hawaiian goods store in Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He is deaf, but enjoys having conversations using written messages and gestures. Communication commences when he treats customers to his coffee, which he takes a great deal of pride in.
