The fiction film debut of Yamamoto Tatsuya, whose documentary Her dear old house was highly regarded both at home and abroad, and the third movie from the "Kitashirakawa-ha Eiga Geijutsu Undo" (Kitashirakawa-group film art movement), a project involving professional film staff and students at the Kyoto University of Arts and Design Department of Film Production. Chiyo (Takahashi Keiko), a woman entering the twilight of her life, runs a mostly deserted general store in Kamihate, a port town in Japan's western San-in region.
