A feature adaptation of an animated coming-of-age television series that gained popularity after screening in a late-night slot in 2011. The ghost of a friend who died young brings change to the lives of a group of estranged childhood friends. New sequences were added that were not included in the television series, and it broke the 1 billion yen mark at the box office in its eighth week of release.
High school first year and truant Jinta (voice: Irino Miyu) is reunited with his friend Menma (voice: Kayano Mei), who died five years earlier and yet appears to have aged normally. She has returned to the realm of the living to fulfill a wish that Jinta has since forgotten, so she tries to make him remember.
