[ Story ]
A young woman (Suzuki Kyoka) turns up at the house of an old fisherman named Kamio (Nakadai Tatsuya). She is the daughter of Lieutenant Uchida (Nakamura Shidou) who served on the legendary Battleship Yamato with Kamio during the Second World War. She has come to carry out her father's last wishes, which were to find the resting place of the battleship and scatter his ashes on the ocean. Kamio and the woman set off in a small fishing boat into the East China Sea. Lieutenant Uchida's daughter stirs up Kamio's wartime memories and the pain comes flooding back. He remembers the glorious heyday of the Yamato sixty years ago and then he begins to remember all the friends he lost onboard. In the closing stages of the war, the crew was ordered to defend the homeland even unto death. Kamio, who lost his family and friends during the war, has buried these memories for over sixty years, but as they head towards the battleship's watery grave, he has to confront the past.
The Battleship Yamato was recreated in its entirety as a set which cost 6 million dollars and filming was completed with the full co-operation of the Japanese Self Defense Forces.
