[ Story ]
The Japanese Constitution, known as the Peace Constitution, has been the subject of heated discussion since the Self Defense Forces were dispatched to Iraq. This documentary examines the Japanese Constitution in the international context. Focusing on the pre-amble and the anti-war clause, Article 9, twelve international experts consider the meaning of the peace constitution in Japan. The interviewees include John Dower, Pulitzer Prize winning author of 'Embracing Defeat', the seminal history of the Occupation; linguist Noam Chomsky; Beate Sirota Gordon, who drafted the equal-rights clause of the constitution; and Kang Man-Gil, a Korean historian.
Directed by John Junkerman, whose Chomsky 9.11 included a long interview with Noam Chomsky after the terrorist attacks on the twin towers.
