[ Story ]
Feature film adaptation of the NHK television series that gained worldwide popularity in the 1980s. Depicts the verve of a girl in the Meiji period who is apprenticed at the age of seven, focusing on episodes from her childhood, based on a woman's diaries. Cast members from the TV series appear in different roles.
Meiji period, year 40 (1907). Oshin (Hamada Kokone), daughter of an impoverished peasant in Yamagata Prefecture, is sent to work as an apprentice at a lumber shop to reduce the number of mouths to feed at home. Her father Sakuzo (Inagaki Goro) and mother Fuji (Ueto Aya) send her off with tears, and she heads down the snowy Mogami River on a raft.
