[ Story ]

Numerous youths died as they became "Kaiten", human torpedo, towards the end of the Pacific War for their country and to protect their loved ones. This is a war drama that searches the meaning of life through these youngsters who died while questioning the purpose of their death. Based on a novel of the same title by Yokoyama Hideo. Directed by Sasabe Kiyoshi of Half a Confession (Han-ochi), screenplay by Yamada Yoji of Love and Honor (Bushi no Ichibun) and Tomikawa Motofumi of The Eel (Unagi).
It is April 1945, four young naval officers are waiting on an advancing submarine that is dodging attacks from enemy vessels. They are on a mission to mount human torpedoes, "Kaiten", to smash against an enemy warship. Each Kaiten is loaded with a large amount of explosives, and these are suicide missions to blow themselves up against the enemy vessels. As Namiki Koji (Ichikawa Ebizo) climbs aboard a Kaiten and waits for an order to attack, he reflects on his teammates of the baseball club, his girlfriend and family. Despite his desire to live, Namiki ends up becoming a weapon and loses his life. Shortly thereafter the war comes to an end.
