[ Story ]

A boy named Taichi (Fukazawa Arashi) comes to Hokkaido in northern Japan, away from his mother (Matsuyuki Yasuko) who is going abroad for work. Taichi finds a fox cub on the road side. He sees his own loneliness in the fox cub and brings it to the veterinary clinic where he stays. Taichi tries his best to raise the cub. A veterinary surgeon, Yajima (Osawa Takao), watches over him strictly, but affectionately. One day, Yajima notices that the cub has problems with its sight as well as its hearing. Yajima feels at the limit of his ability as a veterinary surgeon. Taichi, however, names the cub Helen, and lavishes affection upon it. Helen has confidence in Taichi, too.
Family ties and the joy of life are portrayed in Hokkaido. Helen lives through her natural life, and Taichi makes his best efforts despite feeing lonely. Yajima explores a way of life as a surgeon and as a parent. Based on a juvenile book by Taketazu Minoru, a veterinary surgeon and a leading figure in protecting Kita Kitsune, a type of fox found in northern Japan. The book is based on a real story, from which an adaptation was written for the movie.
