[ Story ]
A documentary about Yamamoto Sakubei, an artist whose paintings and diaries regarding mines and miners have been added to UNESCO's Memory of the World register. As well as introducing Yamamoto's vast body of work, it also features interviews with people who knew him. Through creating a true-to-life portrait of Yamamoto, a fastidious chronicler, the scenery of the times he lived in becomes visible.
Yamamoto was born in 1892 in a mining town in the Chikuho region of Fukuoka Prefecture, and became a miner at the age of fourteen. He continued to work in mines for the next fifty years, and in his sixties he began to channel his memories through his paintbrush, in order to convey them to his descendants.
