[ Story ]
Feature-length documentary by "Grave of the Fireflies" director Takahata Isao. The film's eleven chapters interweave actual footage with animation of the canals that crisscross Yanagawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture, showing how they work, the history, and the relationship between humans and the flora and fauna.
Yanagawa is a water capital. The canals that flow through the city have played an important role in people's lives throughout the ages. Water pollution brought about by modernization has become a problem, but a city worker's rallying cry launches a project to clean the canals. A plan to pave over the canals is put on hold.
