For the first time since the end of the war, a Japanese motion picture group went on location to Okinawa to film "Kairyu", based on a popular magazine serial.
The result is a charming landscape of exotic Okinawa in a beautiful widescreen film. The plot of which is, briefly;
When his ship sinks, Toyono, a wireless operator, is rescued by a smuggling vessel. Later, when the smugglers try to kill him, the ship's captain, Sugioka, helps him escape to Okinawa.
An Okinawan girl named Setsuko falls in love with him but Toyono is unable to forget Yoko, the girl he left at home in Japan. After many hardships, he returns to Japan, only to find that Yoko, believing him to be dead, has married.
When Setsuko visits Japan with an Okinawan dance troupe Toyono meets her but various complications arise before they are finally united.
