[ Story ]

This screen play is based on a prize-winning composition by an 8 year old school boy Yoshitaka Hirabayashi, whose name in the film has been changed to Yoshiyuki Hirai .
Yoshiyuki and his elder brother Yoshihisa attend the Takefu West Grammar School in Fukui Prefecture. They live with their mother who struggles to make both ends meet as their father is in hospital suffering with tuberculosis.
Life appears to take a turn for the better when their father comes home, but soon suffers a relapse. The two boys who love their mother dearly swear to make things easier for her and she does not spare herself so as to bring up her children amid a healthy atmosphere.
As their father's life ebbs away, the children are alarmed at the thought of what might happen to their beloved mother.
Shortly afterwards, little Yoshiyuki receives news that his composition about his mother had been selected for the Governor's Prize. When the family returns from the presentation, they learn that the father is dying. Yoshiyuki places the prize by his father's pillow. Death comes that very night.
The mother and the two boys are grief-stricken but look forward to the future, determined to attain happiness.
