[ Story ]

Shuhei, auditor of a company, is enjoying life with his daughter Michiko and second son Kazuo.
Michiko, now of marriageable age, has looked after the household since the death of her mother.
One day Shuhei and two of his old friends hold a party for their beloved teacher of their middle school, where Shuhei learns that Sakuma, the teacher, has a daughter who has passed the marriageable age. This leads him to reflect on his own daughter, Michiko.
Michiko turns down an opportunity for marriage by refusing to meet the son of her father's friend, because she fears her leaving home would inconvenience her family immensely.
However, she visits her brother, Koichi, who tells her that his friend Miura, who once liked Michiko, is now married another girl.
Shuhei and Kazuo become worried about Michiko, although she appears cheerful Kazuo finds her sobbing alone in her room.
Autumn advances and the day arrives when Michiko leaves home for her wedding with a young man her father's friend Kawai recommended.
After the ceremony, Shuhei feels a heavy loss as if all happiness has left him. Drinking with his friends, Kawai and Horie, his loneliness deepens with the long autumn night.
