Melodrama helmed by Ozu Yasujiro that captures Japanese beauty while depicting pained yet beautiful human events. First film directed by Ozu away from Shochiku.
The Munekata sisters are Setsuko (Tanaka Kinuyo) and Mariko (Takamine Hideko). Their father Tadachika (Ryu Chishu) suffers from cancer and is concerned about Setsuko's drunkard husband Mimura (Yamamura So). Mariko is frustrated by her submissive older sister Setsuko, who runs a bar in Ginza to support her husband. One day, Mariko meets Tashiro (Uehara Ken), an old friend.
