Seki, a gangster with a violent temper, decides to reform and marries Mitsuko, the sister of fellow gangster Isomura. The two open a drugstore near a row of apartment houses. But business is difficult.
When Seki saves the life of a woman in an apartment house, the situation improves. Then Seki and Mitsuko become the parents of a baby boy, but this happiness does not last long, for the baby is killed by a black cat.
When gang warfare breaks out Isomura kills rival boss and an innocent bystander, keeps several apartment dwellers as hostages and orders Seki to bring him money. Early the next morning when Isomura tries to escape, he is shot by waiting detectives.
And Seki and Mitsuko resolve to make a new start with the drugstore, their " fortress for two."
