Naruse Mikio helmed this adaptation of Koda Aya's same-named novel. Repast and Late Chrysanthemums screenplay writer Tanaka Sumie coauthored the script with Ide Toshiro. Depicts the tragicomedy of women gathered in the Yanagibashi entertainment district from the perspective of a maid working at a geisha establishment. Features performances by Tanaka Kinuyo of Aizen Katsura, Yamada Isuzu of Sisters of the Gion, Takamine Hideko of Floating Clouds, Sugimura Haruko of Late Spring and Okada Mariko of Akitsu Springs, with the outstanding presence of legendary actress Kurishima Sumiko, who returned to the silver screen at Naruse's behest after an 18-year hiatus.
