Naruse Mikio helmed this film adaptation of Hayashi Fumiko's bestselling autobiographical novel, which was also adapted for the stage. Born as a peddler's daughter, the impoverished Fumiko struggles as a waitress while writing poetry and eventually finds success as a writer. Alongside Untamed Woman, this work stands as one of Naruse's films on the lives of women. Acclaimed for performances by Takamine Hideko as Fumiko, Tanaka Kinuyo as the mother, and Takarada Akira as the husband. Toho 30th anniversary production.
