[ Story ]
This is film version of the most famous novel of Natsume Soseki, well-known in the West in its English translation. It is about a young school-teacher who has just obtained his first job at the turn-of-the- century when Japan is just accustoming itself to Western ways. The young teacher has to get used to all of the petty rivalry and bureaucracy of a provincial middle school and soon makes up nick-names for his fellow teachers. The principal is Badger because he looks like one; the assistant principal is Red Shirt because he is a fop; the English teacher is Pale Face. And the students give the young teacher his own nick- name, Botchan, with its connotations of spoiled mama's-boy. But there is a girl involved and eventually the whole school joins in the uproar which ends only when the young teacher is dismissed. All of this - including the hero's happiness at leaving - is viewed with humor and compassion. The film stars the radio and TV singing star, Sakamoto Kyu - who first introduced the song Sukiyaki to the world.
