This story is purposely fragmented by flashbacks within flashbacks, of a young man (Sato Kei, seen in Onibaba) whose grasp of reality is so precarious that, due to a previous experience, it is only an unconscious girl, or better, a dead one whom he can love. The lover of one girl, married to another, murderer of a third, he is finally turned in to the police by the two who still love him and who then plan to kill themselves. Again, as in the initial experience which so impressed the unfortunate young man, one of them survives.
