[ Story ]

Tora-san (Kiyoshi Atsumi), the itinerant street vendor, continues his so-called "business trip". But it is Shibamata, his home town in Tokyo, which occupies his heart. There his uncle (Shin Morikawa), aunt (Chieko Misaki), sister Sakura (Chieko Baisho), and Hiroshi (Gin Maeda), her husband, are discussing him. They have lent his room to Yuko (Ayako Wakao), a beautiful wife who is separated from her husband. Then Tora-san suddenly comes home and angrily tries to go away when he learns his room has been occupied. But seeing Yuko, he decides to stay.
One day, Hiroshi asks Tora-san to ask his boss Umetaro (Hisao Dazai) to permit him to quit his job at the tiny printing factory so he can go into business for himself. Tora-san agrees but before he says a word, the boss tearfully begs him to persuade Hiroshi to remain at his factory, because he cannot run it without him. The good-natured Tora-san is in a quandary and vaguely tells both parties that everything has been settled.
Hiroshi and Umetaro, both happily believing that their respective wishes have been fulfilled, hold a banquet. As they drink, however, their misunderstandings are revealed and reproaches are centered on Tora-san, the arbitrator. ·
The trouble is settled at last when Hiroshi gives up his independence. Tora-san becomes even crazier about Yuko. Then Yuko's husband shows up to take her home and Tora-san sets out again on his endless journey.
