[ Story ]

Chikara, a young pickpocket, was picked up by Sakai, a professor at the university, taken into his home and treated as one of the family.
Ten years later, he has justified the professor's trust in him. But daughter Taeko has now begun to consider Chikara more than the brother of days gone by.
One day, Chikara meets Otsuta, a young geisha. They fall in love at first sight and soon start to live together. Sakai finally notices their relationship. He cannot forgive Chikara for what he considers his underhanded behaviour and orders him to choose between himself and the geisha. Chikara weighs his ten year's debt to the professor and, although it means a living death, he bows to the professor's wish and promises to leave Otsuta.
Under the fragrant plum blossoms at the Yushima Shrine, the two, who love each other so much, agree to part, and Chikara leaves for Shizuoka.
Once again Chikara stands under the plum trees at the Yushima Shrine, but the eyes of Otsuta that had loved their pure, snow-white blossoms had been closed forever before his return to Tokyo.
