One day, seeing a woman going down to the valley where many people have committed suicide, Kensaku fallows her, but in missing his footing he injures his eye. The woman turns out to be the wife of Kojiro Utsu who has been arrested in a case of corruption and has decided to kill herself. Utsu, however, is declared innocent, there being insufficient evidence, against him and he establishes the "Yatsugatake Kaihatsu Company" with Date, an employee of Kobe Sangyo for buying up the land around Yatsugatake. Kensaku's peaceful farm draws their attention, and as soon as Yoneji dies, Utsu and Date try to take it over.
One day Kensaku is invited to a reception planned by Utsu when Date attempts to kill him.
