Goro, child ofthe slums, no father, mother a prostitute, unable to enter school, forced to watch his sister die ofmalnutrition, has no choice but to become a criminal. It is therefore only a matter oftime before he is sent to prison where he learns to be even worse.
Once out, he takes up with a girl but, again, finds no chance for a decent life, and very soon becomes a gangster, is almost killed by a rival gang, and is saved only by the devotion of his girl friend who prostitutes herself to pay for his medical expenses.
To protect himselffrom experiences such as this he enters a big gang. At the same time he marries and he and his wife have a child. Now, realizing that his family has become precious to him he decides to go straight.
But when a fellow gangster is killed, gangster etiquette says he must attend the funeral, even though he knows that the others will think he has come to kill them, since he left them under sudden and suspicious circumstances. Still he goes, taking along a gun to protect himself.
