[ Story ]
The theatrical debut film by Kawase Naomi who serves as writer and director. It won the Camera d'Or for Best First Feature Film at the 50th Cannes International Film Festival, making Kawase the first Japanese to win the award.
Kozo (Kunimura Jun) is as a lumberer in Nishi-yoshinomura, Nara Prefecture. He takes part in the initial operations of a railway tunnel construction project, but construction comes to an abrupt halt. 15 years later, Kozo has no willpower to work. He takes his favorite 8mm camera and leaves, never to return again. The family he left behind depart from the area each hiding their sadness and desires to begin facing each of their lives.
