[ Story ]
A Japanese western action movie that is reminiscent of Kurosawa Akira's The Bodyguard (Yojinbo) with a spaghetti western style fused into it. Directed by Miike Takashi of Masters of Horror: Imprint (Imprint Bokkei Kyoutee). Entered in the Competition section at the Venice International Film Festival in 2007. All dialogue is in English. Director Quentin Tarantino made his first appearance in a Japanese film in this film.
A bleak village deep in the mountains a few hundred years after the battle of Dan-no Ura. Remnants of Genji, led by Minamoto Yoshitsune, and Heike, led by Taira no Kiyomori, have formed gang factions, and have been at each other's throats over buried money that has been passed on within the village. It was during such a highly-charged period when a sharp gunfighter (Ito Hideaki) came to the village. Both factions scheme to win him over to their side, but he decides to be neutral. Instead, he backs Shizuka, a woman who has taken refuge with Yoshitsune while attempting to take her revenge on Kiyomori who killed her husband. Shizuka falls victim, and the conflict blows up into a full-scale struggle. The gunfighter brings the fierce battle under control. Having witnessed that peace has returned to the village, the gunfighter leaves.
