Director Fukunaga Takeshi, whose Out of My Hand was screened in the 65th Berlin International Film Festival's Panorama section, chronicles the maturing of a young boy descended from the indigenous Ainu people in this coming-of-age drama. The film was awarded a Special Jury Mention at the 19th Tribeca Film Festival.
Fourteen-year-old Kanto (Shimokura Kanto) lives in an Ainu village along Hokkaido's Lake Akan. After he loses his father, Kanto begins to distance himself from Ainu culture. But then he is introduced to Ainu spirituality by Debo (Akibe Debo).
