[ Story ]
Chinese director, Li Ying , takes on the challenging complicated reality of Yasukuni shrine. ‘Chrysanthemum' (seal of the Emperor's family) and ‘sword' (spiritual symbol of the Yasukuni shrine) are used as hidden motifs. The film was highly acclaimed at international film festivals, including Berlin, Sundance and Hong Kong (Humanitarian Awards for Documentaries). It also stirred up controversy in Japan, and some cinemas cancelled the showing at the last minute.
August 15th, 2005, on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. It is a hot and intense day at Yasukuni shrine as every year. Pre-war like performances unfold on the ground. The issue of collective enshrinement, including class-A war criminals and Prime Minister Koizumi's visit to the shrine hit the headlines, creating ripples across countries in Asia. Images shot over a period of 10 years are interwoven and historical library pictures flood the final scenes.
