[ Story ]
Mizoguchi Kenji's adaptation of a literary classic won the International Award at the 13th Venice International Film Festival.
Oharu (Tanaka Kuniyo) is a star-crossed woman destroyed by men, both hateful and beloved. One freezing winter morning at dawn, Oharu enters a temple as a "soka," or lowly tramp, hiding herself under heavy makeup. She recalls her distant past as the men she has known overlap with the 500 statues of Buddha, and she recollects the misfortunes that accompanied each meeting and parting from the men in her life.
