A husband termed the liquidation of his wife's estate "kanshari" (throwing away with thanks). This film adapts the identically titled essay in which are written his feelings for his wife.
Kenzo's (Bito Isao) wife Kazuko (Nakao Mie) had lived with him in provisional housing for a long time due to Kenzo often moving for his job as a bank employee. When he retired, they spent many happy days in their home finally as husband and wife. Then one day, Kazuko collapses. Kenzo, recalling the irreplaceable time spent with his wife of 62 years, slowly parts with his beloved wife's mementos all while feeling grateful.
