[ Story ]

Tsuyoshi Osanai (Yo OIZUMI) leaves his family home in Hachinohe to study at a university in Tokyo. He finds a job, marries Kozue, and they have a daughter named Ruri. Life is good.
Things begin to change when Ruri is in her second year of elementary school. She develops a high fever that lasts a week, and when she recovers, she acts almost unrecognizably mature. That's not all: she talks of events in the past which she couldn't possibly be aware of, and sings songs from before her time.
Kozue (Ko SHIBASAKI) expresses her concern to Tsuyoshi, but he doesn't take her seriously. Ruri's behavior becomes increasingly worrisome, and one day she suddenly leaves school and makes her way to a video rental store in Tokyo's Takadanobaba. However, she is eventually taken into police custody. Tsuyoshi asks Ruri why she went to such a place by herself, but she only averts her gaze and says little. "You can go wherever you like when you're grown up," says Tsuyoshi. "So until then, do what we say, okay? You're making us all worried."
10 years later, Ruri has kept her promise to her father, and hasn't acted strangely at all since her mysterious trip to Tokyo. She seems to be a perfectly normal high school student, but once she graduates, as if freed from some binding obligation, she abruptly sets off for Tokyo with Kozue. Unfortunately, they meet with an accident on the way, bringing their lives to a premature end...
What was Ruri's destination? After losing his wife and daughter, Tsuyoshi wonders if Kozue knew something about Ruri's bizarre childhood episode and subsequent impulsive actions upon turning 18, but he has no way of discovering the truth.
Time passes, and Tsuyoshi is now 54. He takes a train to Tokyo Station, where he meets Ruri's best friend from high school Yui. Yui claims her daughter who is 7 years old to be the reincarnation of Tsuyoshi's daughter, who died in that fateful accident after graduating from high school. She knows things about the past that only his close family knew, and reveals the shocking truth about why Ruri wanted to go to Tokyo: to reunite with Akihiko Misumi (Ren MEGURO), a man she met and fell in love with in a previous life, as Ruri Masaki (Kasumi ARIMURA).
Tsuyoshi is astonished by this implausible story, but learns how his fate is connected to the checkered destiny of Ruri, who has been reborn with over thirty years of memories from her previous lives, and her star-crossed love affair with Akihiko.
