[ Story ]
Sakamoto Junji helms this coming-of-age drama about the lives of young people at the end of the Edo period. Kasamatsu Norimichi, who collaborated with Sakamoto on Face and A Winter Rose, renders the story with vivid black-and-white cinematography.
Twenty-two-year-old Okiku (Kuroki Haru) was raised in a samurai household but now scrapes by in a tenement with her father. Meanwhile, Chuji (Kanichiro) and Yasuke (Ikematsu Sosuke) are "manure men" who gather excrement from toilets to sell as fertilizer for farmers, and they have a positive attitude despite being abused for their dirty line of work.
