Director Sori Fumihiko adapted the original novel by Yamada Futaro into a film using his own screenplay. This fantasy period drama interweaves the true story of Takizawa Bakin, a popular writer from the Edo period. The "Hakkenden" parts depict the battles of the eight swordsmen using powerful state-of-the-art VFX.
Bakin (Yakusho Koji) begins to tell his friend, painter Katsushika Hokusai (Uchino Seiyo), the story of "Hakkenden" that he is conceiving. The story, which fascinates even Hokusai, becomes so popular that it is serialized for an unusually long time, but just as it is reaching its climax, Bakin loses his sight.
