Director Shiraishi Kazuya helms this film based on the plot penned by 60 years earlier by Kasahara Kazuo, scriptwriter for the "Battles Without Honor and Humanity" series.
Life-and-death choices confront Shibata, a minor domain in the Echigo region, amidst the destruction of the Boshin War. Three parties clash: the Shibata Domain, the new government forces, and the former shogunate forces. The story crescendos into a ferociously bloody battle to defend a fortress. Heishiro (Nakano Taiga) is summoned together with the fighters, including Masa (Yamada Takayuki), all on death row for various crimes.
