[ Story ]

Based on Nashiki Kaho's novel of the same title, which won a number of literary awards including the 44th Shogakukan Literature Award and has been loved by readers for over ten years. Directed by Nagasaki Shunichi of Christmas in August. Sachi Parker, the daughter of the Academy award winning actress Shirley MacLaine, made her Japanese film debut in this movie.
Unable to settle into her new junior high school, Mai (Takahashi Mayu) refuses to go there. Then she is sent to her maternal grandmother, the "Witch of the West" (Sachi Parker), to spend some time with her. The British-born grandmother lives in the forest. Mai wants to become a real witch like her, and hence begins witch training. The tasks, however, are simply "early to bed and early to rise" and "to do decide for yourself", and so on. Being a sensitive girl, Mai had been exhausted trying to get along with people around her, but she gradually regains her ability to "enjoy living" through witch training. She returns to her school, and when she revisits the house in the forest two years later, she finds a message from the Witch of the West as promised.
