[ Story ]
A mystery where a genius physicist unravels the truth behind a challenging case. Based on a novel by the currently most popular and best selling writer, Higashino Keigo, who dominated the top three places in the best selling book ranking in the literary section in 2008. This novel won the Naoki Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the Japanese literary world.
One day a body of a man is discovered. His face is pulverized beyond recognition and fingers are burned to remove fingerprints. The man's identity is confirmed surprisingly quickly, but without any clues. As the investigation reaches a deadlock, detective Utsumi Kaoru (Shibasaki Kou) seeks advice from a genius physicist Yukawa Manabu (Fukuyama Masaharu). When Utsumi finds out that Ishigami (Tsutsumi Shinichi), a next-door neighbor of the victim's ex-wife, is a Teito University graduate, she reports it back to Yukawa, who is also a graduate from the same university. It turns out, strangely enough, that Ishigami was Yukawa's best friend in the past and that Ishigami is the only person whom Yukawa regards as a true genius. However, Ishigami is now leading a dull life as a highschool math teacher. As the investigation progresses, Yukawa begins to suspect Ishigami's deep involvement with this case.
