[ Story ]
Film adaptation of a bestselling comic by a globally well-recognized manga artist, Urasawa Naoki. This film is the first part of a trilogy with a production cost of 6 billion yen. It also attracted media attention as the film features a cast of 300 people. Directed by Tsutsumi Yukihiko of Memories of Tomorrow.
In 2015 a manga artist Kakuta (Moriyama Mirai), who is in prison, hears an astonishing story about the past. In 1997 Kenji (Karasawa Toshiaki) attended a school reunion, and there he was told by an old friend that the logo of a cult group led by a leader who is referred to as ‘Friend' looks very much like the logo of the group they formed at elementary school. Furthermore, incidents were happening across the world just as Kenji wrote in their ‘Book of Prophecy'. It is written in the book that mankind will be threatened with extinction on the last day of the 20th century. When the cult group gains a foothold in politics in 2000, Kenji gets in touch with his friend, Otcho (Toyokawa Etsushi), who designed the logo. Suddenly, a gigantic robot, which spreads bacterial gas, appears. Kenji and his friends try to stop it, but the robot explodes spectacularly before their eyes, leaving the Shinjuku area burned to the ground.
