Film adaptation of a period drama about a woman written by Fujisawa Shuhei who is known as the original story writer of The Twilight Samurai which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Shinohara Tetsuo of First Love recreates Fujisawa's serene world with beautiful scenery.
In the late Edo period, Noe (Tanaka Lena), the eldest daughter of the Urai family with 120 koku (a measure of land value), had lost her first husband and, as advised, married into the Isomura family. However, Noe is unable to adapt to the new family and is feeling miserable every day. On the way home from visiting her aunt's grave, Noe encounters a samurai under a wild cherry tree. The man breaks off a branch of the tree for her. He is Tezuka Yaichiro (Higashiyama Noriyuki), who aspired to marry Noe in the past but in vain. A drought continues again this year and the farmers have been reduced to poverty by heavy taxes. Witnessing such hardship, Yaichiro hacks at a domain official who has been lining his pockets in collusion with a wealthy farmer. Noe is concerned for Tezuka in jail waiting for the judgment by the domain lord, and she visits the Tezuka family in spring carrying a branch of a wild cherry tree.
