[ Story ]

An epic drama inspired by the story of Hashimoto Mochitsura, commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, which torpedoed the USS Indianapolis in the last days of World War II. Written by Fukui Harutoshi (Aegis; Lorelei) and directed by Shinohara Tetsuo, winner of the 26th Yamaji Fumiko Film Prize (Inochi).
It's 2009. Kuramoto Izumi (Kitagawa Keiko) receives a letter from a stranger in America. Enclosed is a sheet of music that belonged to her late grandfather, Kuramoto Takayuki, who was a submarine commander. Izumi visits his old comrade, who tells her the story of her grandfather during the war. In 1945, young Kuramoto (Tamaki Hiroshi), commander of the submarine I-77, was in love with Shizuko (Kitagawa, in a dual role), the sister of Arisawa (Dochin Yoshikuni), his best friend and commander of the I-81. Kuramoto leaves for Okinawa, taking with him a score entitled "Midsummer Orion," put down in Shizuko's own hand. At sea, the I-77 engages in a fierce battle with the U.S. destroyer Percival. With just one hour's worth of oxygen remaining in the vessel, Kuramoto pins his hopes on a last-ditch tactic to survive this seemingly hopeless predicament.
