[ Story ]
Takao (Terao Akira), an unsuccessful novelist, has been living in Tokyo with his wife Michiko (Higuchi Kanako), a competent doctor. One day, Michiko is seized by a panic attack, a mental illness of unknown origin. The couple uses this as a chance to make up their minds to move to Shinshu, Takao's home region. Having arrived in the mountain village, the two of them visit an old woman, Oume (Kitabayashi Tanie), who lives in a temple called Amidado, where the village dead are worshipped. There, Takao encounters Sayuri (Konishi Manami), who writes down the daily thoughts of Oume and publishes them in the village newsletter. Sayuri is afflicted with a serious disease that makes her unable to speak. The village has no doctor, so Michiko sets up an office to treat patients and gradually regains her confidence as a physician through the treatment of Oume and Sayuri. By being in touch with the village people and nature, husband and wife recapture their joy of life. At that time Sayuri's illness worsens. Michiko decides to take charge of her operation.
The second film by Koizumi Takashi, who earlier adapted Kurosawa Akira's script for After the Rain.
