Director Koizumi Takashi, who was mentored by Kurosawa Akira and won the CinemAvvenire Award award at the 56th Venice Film Festival for After the Rain, adapts Hamuro Rin's Naoki Prize-winning novel for film. Beautifully portrays the relationship between a samurai falsely charged with a crime and his guard.
Charged with murder and illicit adultery, Toda Shukoku (Yakusho Koji) is ordered to commit suicide by disembowelment in ten years and in the meantime to compile the domain's history. Shozaburo (Okada Junichi) is put in charge of guarding him, and as they spend time together he finds himself drawn to Shukoku's persona.
