[ Story ]
First film adaptation of Shiba Ryotaro's famed work "Touge" about the heroic Kawai Tsugunosuke, known as the "last samurai." Direction and screenplay by Koizumi Takashi, who worked as assistant director on numerous Kurosawa Akira films.
In 1867 as the Tokugawa Bakufu collapsed, domains split into eastern and western armies. Nagaoka domain chief retainer Kawai Tsugunosuke (Yakusho Koji) struggles to avoid warfare and maintain neutrality to protect the lives of his people. However, talks break down and Kawaii decides to exchange fire with the western army.
