The first full-length science fiction live action film in eight years from Oshii Mamoru, who gained international fame through works including Ghost in the Shell. Depicting a virtual game world where hunters and monsters confront each other in fierce battles, this film is vintage Oshii with additional elements of unique modern stylishness.
Three heroines dressed in full combat gear and packing large weapons find themselves in "Desert 22," a synthetic postthermonuclear war wilderness within the virtual space known as "Avalon (f)." Joined by one male, the four start out as rivals in a game hunting the desert monsters: Gray (Kuroki Meisa), a sniper operating a camouflage combat plane; the sorceress Lucifer (Kikuchi Rinko) who can transform herself at any time into a crow; the assault rifle-wielding Colonel (Saeki Hinako); and the beefy, antitank gun-toting Jäger (Fujiki Yoshikatsu). In an attempt to defeat the legendary enormous sand-whale monster 'Madara Sunakujira (spotted sand whale),' they decide to team together.
