[ Story ]
Miyamoto Musashi (c. 1584-1645) was an unrivalled swordsman who became renowned through stories of his excellent swordsmanship. He wrote a master treatise on military strategy, ‘The Book of Five Rings' and sought the way to enlighten his spirit and cultivate his mind. But what is the truth behind the myth? Is he a national hero fabricated for political purposes, or a universal man misplaced in time?
With ‘The Book of Five Rings' as his guide, maverick filmmaker Oshii Mamoru (Ghost in the Shell) unsheathes his unique vision of the greatest swordsman in Japanese history, cynically demolishing many clichés deeply rooted in popular imagery, in this unusual and controversial portrayal of a legendary character. Produced by animation studio Production I.G (Kill Bill: Vol.1; The Sky Crawlers) the movie is directed by Oshii's long-time collaborator, Nishikubo Mizuho, who brilliantly combines 2D and 3DCGI animation with live action footage in multiple narrative and visual styles, from swordplay classics to documentary language, devoting specific attention to the music score, in a mesmerizing east-meets-west fusion of sounds.
