[ Story ]
The first theatrical film edited from one of the NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) documentary series ‘Satoyama,' which has earned high audience ratings in Japan and wide international acclaim, including the Prix Italia. The four seasons of the "satoyama," the border between the wooded hills and cultivated fields where humans and nature coexist, are explored with the guidance of nature photographer Imamori Mitsuhiko. The vivid, gorgeous high-definition cinematography is memorable.
In Shiga Prefecture in central Japan, there are expansive woods with more than 20,000 kunugi and konara oak trees. An ancient kunugi oak, "the old man of the hills," watches over as flowers bloom in vibrant colors, streams flow, and insects, fish, birds, squirrels and other animals make their lives, rich with character. People come to pick mushrooms and wild herbs, or with insect nets on their shoulders. The woods where nature and humans live together in close synergy—this is satoyama. And this is where the forest and humans have kept a promise for over 1,000 years, the "old man of the hills" tells us. When spring arrives in the woods which have shown us their varied faces over the seasons, the mystery of that promise is revealed.
