[ Story ]
A new documentary directed by Koike Masato, whose previous film The Etiquette of Life garnered much attention for introducing the Japanese town of Nishiwaga, where medical care for nursing infants and senior citizens is free of charge. Ashikabi—Kodomo ga hiraku mirai was filmed over the course of a four-month stay at the Michinoku Green Institute, a large care facility for victims of child abuse. To protect the children's privacy, the filmmakers agreed to distribute the film by way of projected screenings only. Located in a residential district of Morioka City, the Michinoku Green Institute takes in children from across Iwate prefecture, who live together under one roof. 70% of those children are victims of abuse. With cooperation from the region, the academy staff provides children with cultural and nature experiences that aid in their recovery. However, getting over the deep physical and emotional scars they've suffered is not an easy prospect for these children. In spite of that, the strength they find within gives them pride and the will to live. Their vitality evokes the fang ("kiba") shaped buds that sprout on the reeds ("ashi") of spring after a long winter.
